چکیده

We implement a dynamical model that describes the polarization behavior in VCSELs containing an absorbing region surrounding the active zone. We find four regions of qualitative different behaviors: stable linearly-polarized operation, intensity pulsations of a linearly-polarized component, pulsations of both total intensity and polarization components, and polarization self-pulsations with constant total intensity. We characterize the four regions by computing the polarization resolved optical and power spectra. The predicted scenario agrees with recent experimental results. OCIS codes: 250.7260, 260.5430

Diiusive Turn-oo Transients in Current Modulated Multitransverse Mode Vcsels

Secondary pulsations are an example of di usive turn-o transients that can limit the performance of VCSELs in optical communication systems. Secondary pulsations are rstly analysed by using a model where a modal expansion of the electric eld is performed. The maximum power of the secondary pulsations and the time at which they appear uctuate when the spontaneous emission noise is present. A lin...

Cavity Solitons in Driven VCSELs above Threshold

CSs have been theoretically predicted and recently experimentally demonstrated in broad area, vertical cavity driven semiconductor lasers (VCSELs) slightly below the lasing threshold. Above threshold, the simple adiabatic elimination of the polarization variable is not correct, leading to oscillatory instabilities with a spuriously high critical wave-number. To achieve real insight on the compl...

Dynamic Characteristics of VCSELs for Cs-Based MEMS Atomic Clocks

We have fabricated flip-chip-bondable vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) emitting at 894.6 nm wavelength for Cs-based atomic clock applications. For polarization control, we have integrated shallow semiconducting surface gratings in the top Bragg mirror. A modulation bandwidth of more than 5GHz is reached at only 0.5mA bias. Modulation current efficiency factors larger than 12GHz/...

Spatio-Temporal Emission Dynamics of VCSELs: Modal Competition in the Turn-On Behavior

We present 2D-spatially and temporally resolved measurements of the emission of selectively oxidized stateof-the-art VCSELs of intermediate aperture sizes, showing their rich modal, polarization, spectral, and spatial dynamics. For the characterization of the repetitive dynamics we performed experiments with a technique we developed called TRIDA (Temporally Resolved Imaging by Differential Anal...

Inverted Grating Relief Atomic Clock VCSELs

Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) with single-mode and single-polarization emission at a wavelength of 894.6 nm have become attractive light sources for miniaturized Cs-based atomic clocks. So far, VCSELs used for these applications are single-mode because of small active diameters which has the drawbacks of increased ohmic resistance and reduced lifetime. Employing surface grati...
